How do you guys feel about this stuff? Probably my biggest obsession aside from Death Grips. If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's basically an entire genre based around 80's and 90's retrofuturism. This quote describes it best:
"a kind of music you never knew you knew existed: techno-capitalist stock promotional music for the era of the personal computer ... Each track is bristling with the maximalist promise of a world of possibilities waiting behind the screen for your double-click, and evokes a time when we were much less familiar with and cynical about the virtual world technology has brought us into." Of course, some of it does kind of vary from that. The main thing here is nostalgia for technology and consumerist culture from our childhood.

I got a weird introduction to vaporwave. I heard Macintosh Plus first and dug it specifically for its dropped pitch and obscure sampling. I moved straight to Ferarro and was greeted by Windows sound remixes. I still dug it but I came into the genre wanting the wrong thing.
In your opinion, is Macintosh Plus really vaporwave?

Yes, Mac Plus is vaporwave. There are a lot of different sides to vaporwave so the definition has become kind of shaky. You have the stuff that emphasizes lower pitch, loops, and slower tempo to make the original song sound somewhat jarring and give it this new context. Then you have the stuff like James Ferraro's Far Side Virtual which is supposed to sound like kitsch computer pop you'd hear in a kids educational video about the internet or something. What they both have in common is this retro, early internet aesthetic.

I guess the term vaporwave is like punk in a way. it's an idea and a feeling instead of a sound.

I like Floral Shoppe and Yes USB and am kinda obsessed with OPN. Aside from that, I'm not really into vaporwave.
The "aesthetics" thing is nice probably, in its low polygonal glory
